The Muligan year

Posted in: Uncategorized

Well there were some real highs and real lows for me in the year 2009. and after checking the balance between the to I have come to the conclusion that I’m taking a muligan for 2009. I have already quickly turned the corner and have decided when i moved into my new apartment in the middle of this month that I was starting 2010 then. So the past 15 days have been so wonderful, cause I’m not in 2009 anymore. I am glad that I, my daughter, my family and friends have all made it through in good shape as well. So hey lets all take a deep breath, and make 2010 the one to remember!

It was 30 years ago tonight (December 29th, 1979) that Paul McCartney & Wings gave their final live performance. McCartney, who had formed the band in 1971, had seen the group go through several incarnations — running through three guitarists and four drummers in only seven years. The main nucleus of the band, McCartney, wife Linda and Denny Laine, were the group’s only constant members. The final 1979 line-up featured guitarist Lawrence Juber and drummer Steve Holley.
Their final show, which was the closing spot on the three-night Concerts For The People Of Kampuchea UNICEF benefits at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, featured Wings’ normal two hour set, before being joined by the Who’s Pete Townshend and Kenny Jones, Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones, along with Ronnie Lane, James Honeyman-Scott of the Pretenders, Bruce Thomas of the Attractions, Procol Harum’s Gary Brooker, and Dave Edmunds, for a three-song “Rockestra” performance.

The mini-set, which featured all the musicians in gold lame tails and top hats, included nearly 40 musicians tearing through Little Richard’s “Lucille,” the Beatles’ “Let It Be,” and two run-throughs of McCartney’s “Rockestra Theme,” which was released earlier that year, featuring many of the same musicians, on Wings’ Back To The Egg album. The tune went on to snag the Grammy for that year’s Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Christmas For A Soldier

Posted in: Uncategorized

soldier-2

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.

Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.
“What are you doing?” I asked without fear,
“Come in this moment, it’s freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!”
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts.

To the window that danced with a warm fire’s light
Then he sighed and he said “It’s really all right,
I’m out here by choice. I’m here every night.”
“It’s my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I’m proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
My Gramps died at ‘Pearl on a day in December,”
Then he sighed, “That’s a Christmas ‘Gram always remembers.”

My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ‘Nam’,
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
I’ve not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he’s sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue… an American flag.
I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.”
“So go back inside,” he said, “harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I’ll be all right.”
“But isn’t there something I can do, at the least,
“Give you money,” I asked, “or prepare you a feast?

It seems all too little for all that you’ve done,
For being away from your wife and your son.”
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
“Just tell us you love us, and never forget.

To fight for our rights back home while we’re gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.”

Now that THAT is out of the way, let me share some shopping memories with you.

God, I love the holidays and the “festive” folks that make it sooooo special.

Well we are 1 week away from Christmas and I’m sure many of you, some of you, hell maybe 1 of you has asked yourself “what can I get Old Lar for Christmas?  He does so much for me, what can I do for him?”  You have asked yourself that haven’t you.  Moving along.

Here some suggestions that just might help get me thru the season and into the new year.

  1. Someone tell that jeweler in Spartanburg that ‘if I have to give him gold….it aint free money.’

2.  Tell all stores to STOP “up selling.” I’m tired of having to answer a bunch of questions about do I want to change memberships, rent for longer, spend more in the store.
I’m ready to whack the guys at Blockbuster over this. Just rent me the damn DVD.

3.  Somebody fix that train wreck of a TV show on Ch 7 called the Scene. Damn.

4.  Convince Al Gore to admit he is a fraud and in it for the money.

5.  I need the Editorial guy at TV-4  to stop pimping the station and to actually take a stand.
He went out on a limb a month ago and declared that WYFF was in favor of Thanksgiving.  That took lots of guts. Now he has one running that promotes the stations “Pay it forward” segment during the news.  Again, very gutsy.

6.  Send a note To:  Bob Dylan – Everyone in America has voted and NO ONE wants to hear you sing Christmas songs. EVER.

7.  Here is a special request. I have $5. Someone bump off the guy that “went to Jarret.” Then there are ALL the women on Housewives of Orange County, Atlanta, New Jersey, New York, Pickens, etc . They are either trash or stupid beyond words. PLEASE make them go away. Now!

8.  Best wishes to all the folks at Spartanburg Harley and Century-BMW.  These are some of the nicest folks that you will ever meet. Its been a pleasure to represent them and their products this year  Go by, tell them you heard me do their commercials on Rock 101….and then buy something! :)

Seriously, have a nice holiday. Be kind to those that love you.

Be thankful they care enough to put up with you.

It’s no “day at the beach” hanging out with me and I appreciate the few that have the patience.
