It was 45 years ago tonight (August 29th, 1966), that the Beatles performed their last official concert in San Francisco at Candlestick Park. The tour, which had already hit Germany, Japan and the Philippines, was dogged by controversy — protests greeted the group in Tokyo prior to their performance at the Budokan Arena, which until then had been reserved strictly for the martial arts. And in the Philippines, the group fled the country after being accused of snubbing the infamous President and First Lady Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, after they politely declined to attend an official state luncheon.
By the time the group landed in the U.S. to kick off the tour on August 12th, a furor was brewing over John Lennon’s remarks about religion made months before in a British interview, which had been reprinted out of context in a teen magazine, saying: “Christianity will go, it will vanish and shrink. . . Jesus was alright, but his disciples were thick and ordinary… We’re more popular than Jesus now.” Lennon’s statements, which were ignored in Britain, ignited protests, including record burnings all over the “bible belt” and southern U.S. states.

The Beatles held a press conference on August 11th in Chicago, the night before they were due to perform, with Lennon trying to explain exactly what he meant in the interview. In lieu of an actual apology this quelled the Beatle bonfires, but the controversy cast a shadow over the tour which proved to be lackluster, both in the Beatles’ performances and ticket sales.

A new ZZ Top tribute album will feature fresh covers of classic tunes from the Texas blues-rock trio by artists like Nickelback, Daughtry and Duff McKagan. Titled A Tribute From Friends, the collection will arrive on October 11th and feature newly-recorded versions of 11 of the band’s greatest hits, including Nickelback’s performance of “Legs,” “Waitin’ for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago” by Daughtry, Filter’s take on “Gimme All Your Lovin’” and Wyclef Jean’s run through “Rough Boy.”
The album kicks off with “Sharp Dressed Man,” from The M.O.B., a new side act composed of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler on vocals, Jonny Lang on guitar, and Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on bass and drums.
ZZ Top — guitarist Billy F Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard — said in a statement, “We were told there was going to be a ZZ Top tribute album a while ago and logically asked, ‘Who are we paying tribute to?’ Then we found out that a bunch of great artists were paying tribute to us and we were in disbelief . . . we’re so delighted that our music resonates with these great musicians whom we so admire.”
The track listing for A Tribute From Friends is:
“Sharp Dressed Man” – The M.O.B.
“Gimme All Your Lovin’” – Filter

It was 42 years ago today — August 18th, 1969 — that the Woodstock Music and Art Fair wrapped with Jimi Hendrix’s incendiary set after more than three days of music in Bethel, New York. More than 450,000 people converged upon the small upstate town to hear rock’s biggest bands perform. Although Woodstock was neither the first nor last major festival concert, the fact that the youth of America were able to congregate in one place with no violence during one of the most turbulent years of the decade, gave birth to the notion of the “Woodstock Nation” and gave a voice — and a face — to the hippie ideal.

Artists who performed at the legendary festival included Joan Baez, Country Joe McDonald & the Fish,Arlo Guthrie, Richie Havens, Mountain, Janis Joplin, the Who, the Band, Canned Heat, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Grateful Dead, Sly & the Family Stone, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Sha Na Na, John Sebastian, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Joe Cocker, and many, many more.
