I’ve been trying to write this blog for almost a month. Its taken this long because its been very very difficult to put the words together without bringing people down, about someone they don’t know, when they already have a plate full of personal problems. But here goes.
Right after Christmas I got a call while on the air from Tony Goodwin. Tony is a member of the “Friends of Whitten Center” and usually I hear from him or Glenn Bledsoe when they want me to promote something for Whitten. Naturally I started out by busting his chops. Then he asked if I had heard anything about Glenn. That’s when I got the news.
It seems Glenn was driving home December 23rd, he lost control of his truck, crashed and died at the scene. I knew Tony wasn’t kidding, even though I wished he had been. At that moment I knew I had lost a good friend.
Glenn Bledsoe had worked at Whitten Center for almost 35 years and was a good a representative of a fine organization as you could have asked for. But, he was more than that. He was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Even when things were tough, he could brighten a room just by walking in. Over the years we had worked on a number of motorcycle events for Whitten and I had a chance to watch him put all he had into all these events to raise money for Whitten Center and all the good it does.
As I said at the top of the post, this has been tough to write and I’ve put it off for a while, because no matter how I started, I always ended up thinking the same thing. Many others would be much better saying what I wanted to convey. He was great guy and I will miss him. I feel for his family and I know they and Whitten have lost more than just a man.
I am embarrassed to admit it, but I found myself feeling sorry for me at his passing. Seems selfish, but then I heard a new song from Tobey Keith about the loss of a friend of his. It talks about the passing of his friend Wayman Tisdale. Keith does a much better job than I can.
Glenn Bledsoe. Great work from a good man.
